In this climate, moisture inside a building envelope leads to microbial growth quickly, and materials such as drywall, insulation, and cabinetry absorb it readily. The equipment repair is usually modest compared with the cost of remediating a ceiling or a wall cavity.
Turning the system off when active leaking is discovered limits how much additional water is produced while service is arranged.
